The evening sky over Cook Inlet was beautiful tonight. We didn’t get a real sunset, because the sun was covered by clouds, but the sky was still amazing.
We had about two feet of new snow in our driveway when we woke up, which was AWESOME, but also frustrating. Our plow guy came and cleared out the driveway early this morning, but the city didn’t plow the street until sometime this afternoon. So it was difficult, at best, to get out this morning.
But I did get out, because I am awesome. And also, because I have an SUV with studded snow tires. Rush hour was the usual craziness. There were lots of cars in ditches and major delays. You’d think at some point, Alaskans would get used to driving in snow. I know we haven’t had a big snow in a couple of months, but c’mon, people – we go through this every winter.
Our deck got a nice covering of powder. This isn’t quite enough for snow machining, but it’s a good start.
February is one of my favorite months in Alaska, for a few reasons: we usually get lots of snow, it’s not too cold (today was in the 20s), and we start to get a normal amount of sunlight. Today, the sun came up at 9:01 a.m., and set at 5:27 p.m. That’s a total of 8 hours, 16 minutes! Whoo hoo! And, we’re getting five and-a-half minutes more of sun every day.
When we get to this point, the point when we’re getting more than five minutes of extra sunlight a day, I can really feel it. That’s more than a half-hour a week, and wow – is it dramatic. Because, it just keeps going. We’ll more and more sun until we have almost 24 hours of daylight (in June). I actually feel the winter blahs starting to dissipate as the light increases.
I’m so loving February today.
